What material is a raincoat made of, and why does it keep you dry?

What materials are raincoats made of? Why do they provide protection from the rain? Raincoats are crafted from waterproof fabrics such as tape, oilcloth, and plastic films, including the newer polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) waterproof‑breathable composite fabrics.

The principle behind a raincoat’s waterproofing: While modern raincoats come in an ever-growing variety of materials and styles, one characteristic has remained unchanged—water droplets on the fabric quickly coalesce into tiny beads and then roll off. That’s why raincoats are waterproof.

When a drop of liquid lands on a solid surface, depending on the relative strengths of the intermolecular forces between the liquid’s molecules and those between the liquid and the solid, the liquid can adopt one of two distinct behaviors. If the attractive forces between the liquid and the solid are weaker than the cohesive forces within the liquid itself, the droplet tends to contract into a small sphere, minimizing its contact with the surface. Conversely, if the adhesive forces between the liquid and the solid exceed the liquid’s internal cohesive forces, the droplet spreads out flat on the surface. The former phenomenon is referred to as “non-wetting”—for example, mercury on a glass plate—while the latter is called “wetting,” such as water on a glass surface. Rainwater falling on the surface of a raincoat exhibits non-wetting behavior, because the rubber’s attraction to water molecules is far weaker than the hydrogen‑bonding forces among water molecules themselves. As a result, water molecules prefer to coalesce and bead up, rolling off the raincoat’s surface. At the same time, the fabric still contains numerous tiny pores; however, since rainwater does not penetrate the rubber, water molecules cannot pass through these pores, rendering them ineffective. Meanwhile, air molecules continue to circulate freely, ensuring the raincoat remains breathable. Because the key to a waterproof raincoat lies in the rubberized surface of the fabric, special care should be taken during storage to avoid damaging this protective layer. Avoid exposing the raincoat to sharp objects. One additional point deserves particular attention: after washing, try to keep the raincoat out of direct sunlight to prevent the rubber from aging. Rubber is a polymer material containing numerous atomic groups and unsaturated chemical bonds, making it highly reactive with various atmospheric constituents, such as oxygen; these reactions are irreversible. Furthermore, when storing the raincoat, refrain from placing oily or greasy substances on it to prevent contamination. Once contaminated, the raincoat becomes difficult to clean.
